Vietnam to Cambodia Bike Ride

There are numerous charity challenges out there and for anyone wanting to take on a personal challenge and do something positive, both for themselves and to support a favourite charity, taking on a sporting challenge may be the way to go. The Vietnam to Cambodia Bike Ride scheduled for February 2011 is Co-operation Ireland's next big trip of a lifetime.
The challenge takes us through two of South East Asias's most fascinating countries which have only really opened up to foreign travellers in recent years. The bike ride begins in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City, previously known as Saigon, the heart and soul of Vietnam, and finishes at Angkor Wat in Cambodia,, a world heritage site, which along with its surrounding temples, is regarded as one of the Wonders of the World. The route will take you through quiet rural roads where the scenery transforms into a patchwork of paddy field where water buffalo wallow in the vast rice fields. You will wind your way through villages of simple wooden houses and along the Mekong River, crossing the river to reach Kompong Cham, a French trading post and 3rd largest city in Cambodia. Photo opportunities are endless.
The good thing about a trip such as this is you can come alone and end up with a whole bunch of like minded people who will remain friends for a long time to come.
No-one said it was easy. You need to fundraise for the charity and train in advance of the trip so you will be fit to cycle approx 450 km over 5 days. But it is a challenge and the personal satisfaction you will feel on arrival at one of the most beautiful outlying temples belonging to Angkor Wat, is a fitting finish to your incredible journey.
